Never fear! There are other ways to participate in a challenge like this, and they’re just as important as the authors and artists. Check out all the ways you can join in!
All stories must be beta’d for this challenge, and not every author has one that they can use consistently. Betas are essential to writing for a challenge like this, because you catch all of those tricksey little details that authors miss while we’re writing: things like grammar train wrecks, spelling catastrophes, homophonic blunders (e.g. their vs. there) and punctuation errors (e.g. its vs. it’s). Also, a beta can catch characterisation flaws, missing sections where a scene may have been partially deleted or gone unfinished by mistake, and all those other gaffes that make an author headdesk if they’re not caught before posting.
Having an alpha reader is not a requirement of the challenge for writers; however, alpha readers can be incredibly helpful. You don’t take on the proofing responsibilities that a beta does (though if you spot something egregious, you’ll probably point it out anyway), but if an author has a plot hole that you could sail the Lusitania through? You, the alpha, is going to catch it and help them close it. You let the writer know if something doesn't quite make sense or if there’s a loose end that’s not quite tied off right. You can catch those unfinished scenes or characterization flaws before the fic goes to the beta for proofing, which makes that part go loads faster. And most importantly: you can tell your author whether the story needs fleshing out or trimmed up, and you can offer suggestions when needed.
Where would the writers and artists be without their cheerleaders? You are the people who keep them going through it all. Writer's block, looming deadlines, Real Life issues that get in the way... you offer support, a shoulder to cry on when they need it, encouragement, a nagging presence when they don't think they'll be able to work without one. ;)
If any of these sound like something you think you'd be inclined to do, please take the time to sign up! Authors will have the opportunity to go through this post and decide who to contact based on what you're willing to read vs. what they're writing.
When signing up, please use the form provided:
Author sign-ups here | Artist sign-ups here | FAQ here
1. You are required to create at least one piece of art that falls into one of the following categories:
Manips, Artwork or Digital Artwork - 500x500px minimum dimensions
Fanvids - 1 minute minimum duration.
2. The artwork must focus on Gabriel or Richard Speight, Jr.
3. Icons, spacers, wallpapers, and fanmix covers do not count toward your obligation, but are of course allowed in addition to items listed above.
4. Artist claims will be on a first come/first serve basis. You will be allowed to comment on your first choice and an alternate. Once all stories have been claimed, the mods will reveal the pairings and you will have an opportunity to contact your author.
5. You may not post your art or vid anywhere on the internet prior to your assigned posting date. Teasers may be posted, but not completed work.
6. Your artwork should be posted on you own journal or website on your assigned posting date. The link to the post should be provided to your author to include on the header they submit to the community. Please see the FAQ for this round’s policy on locked entries.
7. At this time, you may choose to sign up as either an author or an artist. Not both. Please see the FAQ for more info about this round’s policy on double-duty sign-ups.
Important Dates for Artists
Note that all dates given here are on the 'as long as it is that day somewhere in the world' basis - eg, the sign-ups will be closed as soon as I get to the computer after the last timezone ticks over onto March 5. For the due date, this basically means 'send it to us before you go to bed on that day'.
*March 4, 2014 is the last possible day to sign up.
*On March 5, 2014, a list of all story summaries and titles will be posted for you to choose from. Once you have claimed a story, the mods will confirm your claim. After all stories are claimed, the mods will post a list of the author/artist pairs and you may contact your author. Since authors are required to submit a completed draft of their stories before artist claims begin, your author should be able to supply you with a complete if not-yet-polished fic to work with.
*The due date for artwork and video drafts is April 6, 2013. You must provide us with either a live link to the art/video, or the art/video file itself. The art or video must meet the minimum challenge guidelines and focus primarily on Gabriel or Richard Speight, Jr.
*Posting will begin on April 11, 2013. You will receive an assigned posting date from the mods for on or after that day. Your primary art piece must be completed by then and unlocked at the same time that your author posts the fic header and art links to the community. It is the author's responsibility to post the fic in this community, but it is your responsibility to give the author the links to your art ahead of time so the author can include them!
*If you have created work for your author such as icons to use on the post(s), dividers or pictures to embed in the story, or covers to use with a fanmix, it should be provided to your author before your scheduled posting date.

2. Stories may be slash, gen, or het. AUs and crossovers with the French Mistake ‘verse or the CW RPF ‘verse are permitted, as are fusions. All other crossovers by negotiation with the mods.
3. Stories must be beta’d and coded prior to posting. Also, if your artist has created anything to be embedded in the story (e.g. dividers), these should be embedded prior to posting.
4. You may not post your story, either as a completed fic or a WIP, anywhere on the internet prior to your assigned posting date. Teasers or samples may be posted, but these should be as short as possible.

6. The central story element must focus on Gabriel or Richard Speight, Jr.
7. On the day of artist claims, please wait until the mods have confirmed the author/artist pairings before contacting your artist to begin your collaboration.
8. At this time, you may choose to sign up as either an author or an artist. Not both. Please see the FAQ for more info about this round’s policy on double-duty sign-ups.
Important Dates for Writers

For the due date, this basically means 'send it to us before you go to bed on that day'.
*November 24, 2013 is the last possible day to sign up.
*The first check-in on December 30, 2013 and second check in on January 26, 2014 are not mandatory. No one will be dropped from the challenge for not responding to these check-ins. However, we encourage our authors to participate in them: not just so that we mods have an idea of how the challenge is progressing, but also so that the participants can give each other encouragement and feedback. The second check-in is especially helpful for the latter, as authors will be allowed to post a teaser or snippet from their story in the comments.
*By the end of March 2, 2014, the mods must receive the following by e-mail:
1. Complete story draft with final title
2. Artist claim summary
3) All applicable story warnings, pairings and rating
Any authors also wishing to sign up as artists may do so once the mods have received these materials.
*On March 5, 2014, your anonymous summary and title will be posted for artists to claim. Please wait until the mods confirm the artist’s claim and post the pairings before contacting your artist.
*Posting will begin on April 11, 2014. You will receive an assigned posting date from the mods for on or after that day. An appropriate story header will be supplied to you, and the post must contain the links to your story and the completed artwork created by your artist. All entries related to the work must be unlocked at posting or the post will not be accepted by the mods.

Hi guys! It's that time of year again - time for the Secret Lovers Exchange at team_free_love!
Participants anonymously post a list of prompts and preferences, and we will match you up for a fic exchange. Each participant must write a story based off the prompts received, and someone else will write something for you based off yours. Fics must be at least 2000 words long, and must contain the characters Sam, Dean, Castiel, and - because we're being more flexible this year - one or more of Gabriel, Kevin, Charlie, and Benny. The mods will post the fics anonymously at first, then reveal authorship at the very end.
It's great fun, and previous years have resulted in a lot of amazing fics. Come along and join in!
Rules and timeline are here, sign-up post here.
And that's a wrap!
Thank you, everybody, for another great year of Gabriel Big Bang. We ended up with fifteen fics, which is definitely a respectable number, and there's definitely some gems there!
Don't forget you can add your fics for this year or any previous year at the AO3 GBB collection. Have fun, and happy hours of Gabriel reading!
Pairing (if any): Dean Winchester/Gabriel
Word count: Short of 30k
Warnings/Spoilers: Mentions of bestiality and rape.
Summary: Given a choice, Dean wouldn’t actually be nursing the archangel who screwed him and his brother over several times back to health. Neither would he go on a road trip with the angel to look for said brother. Not that he was given options, of course.

Title: Gone to the Dogs
Pairing (if any): Castiel/Dean
Genre/Tropes Family AU
Word count: 19,510
Warnings/Spoilers: Violence, bullying, off-screen character death (John Winchester)
Summary: Gabriel has had enough of Heaven and its rules and regulations. He Falls to get away from it all. Only, something goes wrong during his Fall.
Instead of ending up as a human, Gabriel finds himself trapped in the body of a dog – one of the four faces of his true form. To make matters worse he's hit by a car and taken to the local pound.
He manages to get himself adopted by Sam and Dean Winchester, much to the disapproval of his brother, Castiel, an angel who Fell from Heaven to be with Dean. Sam and Dean are struggling to recover from the death of their father a few months earlier. Getting a dog is supposed to be the first step on the road to healing, but Gabriel only causes trouble.
Despite himself, Gabriel begins to care about Sam and Dean, and about their fractured family, but his attempts to help nearly get Sam taken into care.

Title: Laughing Fire
Pairing (if any): Gabriel/Kali
Word count: 25941
Warnings/Spoilers: Some mythological violence.
Summary: Thousands of years before Sam and Dean Winchester kick-start the Apocalypse, Gabriel leaves home and abandons his name. People call him Loki now, and he quickly discovers that his new identity is so much more than a clever cover and a fake name. He soon faces danger, adventure, giants, battles, monsters, and prophecies as he struggles to adapt to a world that he might be destined to destroy. Draws heavily from Norse mythology.

Title: Rolling in the Black
Author: Vera Dragonmuse
Artist: Sumer Starlight
Pairing (if any): Gabriel/Sam
Rating: hard R
Word count: 17k
Warnings/Spoilers: discussion of traumatic events, including medical torture in line with original Firefly canon.
Summary: For ten years, Gabriel and his motley crew have traveled through the black on the tempestuous ship, Morningstar. It's a hard life, complicated by Gabriel's other persona as Loki and an uneasy relationship with Alliance. When two mysterious passengers come aboard, everything will be threatened.

Title: Grace Surrounds Us
Pairing (if any): Sam/Gabriel/Jess [Optional]
Genre/Tropes Multi, angst (some whumpage, ish, I think)
Word count: 38,234
Warnings/Spoilers: Brief non-con, semi-graphic descriptions of violence, depression, Spoilers through Season 7, AU pre-Season 8.
Summary: "Jess was sitting on the porch of her parent's home in Heaven when the Archangel Gabriel found her. He was shorter and more human-like than she'd imagined."
In which Jessica Moore learns that there is, in fact, life after death if you know the right Archangels, and that love isn't limiting.

Title: One Man Band
Word Count: 17,423
Warnings/Spoilers: Swearing. Violence.
Summary: Superpower AU. The Winchesters have little interest in a petty thief who goes around stealing items of no street value. This changes, though, when they figure out that Gabriel isn't working alone. Who is he working for, and what interest do they have in a set of four, seemingly useless rings? The Winchesters are about to find out, the hard way.

Title: Gabriel & Sandy. The Story of an angel and his dog.
Pairing (if any): Gabriel/Kali (inferred).
Rating: NC – 17.
Warnings/Spoilers: Character death (temporary), dog grief (also temporary), gastro porn, pranks, other character deaths, zombie chicks, drunken women, Doctor Who, Star Trek and X-files refernces, swearing, trickster grade roofies, alien abduction, alien non-con with a beaded object, SamImpala, demon blood (and the drinking there of), angel vessels, teasing, flirting, mentions of prophets, warm beer (inferred).
Summary: Mel Brooks once said, "Tradgedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die." Somehow Gabriel seems to have taken these words to heart, on more than one occasion. Especially when those occasions happen to collide with the interferrence of certain hunters; namely Sam and Dean Winchester. Even zapping his baby brother out of the way so that he can get away with it, if it happens to come up, then it comes up. Then he gets a one way trip to Surprise land. However there's a bigger picture here, not just the lessons from a frustrated old archangel. Who is trying in vain to convey to those two knucklehead Winchester Brothers. But something else. Something bigger than a stinking prize fight; and Gabriel and Sandy know it.

Title: You Only Live Twice
Pairing (if any): Dean/Castiel, Gabriel/original characters
Genre/Tropes: Time Travel, alternate canon

Link to fic: on AO3
Link to art: None.
Title: With Open Eyes
Pairing (if any): Gabriel/Mary/John
Genre/Tropes: Pre-Series AU
Word count: ~23,000
Warnings/Spoilers: Canon-compliant character deaths. Explicit sex with M/M, M/F and F/F elements (but only John/Mary/Gabriel). Sometimes Gabriel is Kate. The Michael/Adam is angelcest. This is mostly a pre-series, somewhat canon-compliant AU but contains spoilers up to 8.12 "As Time Goes By".
Summary: Gabriel's been watching the Winchester and Campbell lines for centuries. When he sets eyes upon John and Mary for the first time, he starts developing feelings. Gabriel isn't going to let Michael use them and their family for the apocalypse. Even if Mary and John never feel the same way about him.

Title: Before, After and Everything In Between
Pairing (if any): Dean/Gabriel, Gabriel/Kali (brief)
Word count: 28,426
Warnings/Spoilers: Takes place after "Mystery Spot".
Summary: In the aftermath of fleeing from the Trickster and the Tuesday that would not die, Dean begins to experience what he thinks are dreams. Different places, different names, different times, but all have the Trickster in them. And all end in pain and death. Is the Tuesday from Hell going to happen on a Wednesday?

Title: The Honey Trap Test
Genre/Pairing: Sam/Gabriel. Side order of Cas/Dean. Past Sam/Brady.
Genre/Tropes: AU romance
Word count: ~34,000
Warnings/Spoilers: A multitude of references to various pop cultural sources.
Summary: Subscribing to a honey trap agency's services to investigate his brother Dean's possible infidelity, software engineer Sam Winchester is not prepared for the strange and very confident little guy that the agency sends to take care of Sam's case. Soon Sam is entangled in a net of lies that threatens to destroy his chances of winning back the love of his life.

Title: Quatrain -- A Song In Four Voices
Pairing (if any): Gabriel/Kali/Jess/Sam
Word count: 24946
Warnings/Spoilers: domestic violence, violence against children, dysfunction families, incest (all discussed)
Summary:Squaring up is hard to do - moreso outside of the species. Gabriel wants to get married, properly married, with two wives and a husband all properly aligned. And all he needs to do is get Sam and Jess to let him, a sub-adult blue, into their relationship, and then find a suitable red-moiety female angel who'll agree to the arrangement. Simple, right?

Title: Kitchen Heaven
Pairing (if any): Gabriel/Sam, Dean/Castiel, one sided Balthazar/Castiel
Word count: 30,557
Warnings/Spoilers: Some explicit sexual situations, language, assault.
Summary: Gabriel’s never been very much good at anything in life, apart from cooking and entertaining a crowd. It only makes sense that he should try and bite off more than he can chew by becoming a TV chef. While Kitchen Heaven succeeds in their small home state, it’s not exactly the household name Gabriel wants it to be. With the help of his brother-producer-financial backer Castiel, and newly hired assistant Sam, he’s going to try and get syndication from a national network. It’s hardly as easy as pie, and it only gets worse when Sam’s trouble-making brother turns up and the studio owner sets his sights on Castiel.

Title: Into Temptation
Pairing (if any): Dean/Gabriel
Word count: 15,231
Warnings/Spoilers: slash, gender bending, het, food!sex, oral, toys, dom!Gabriel
Summary: Despite millennia of steering clear of his family, Gabriel found himself completely unable to resist looking up the two vessels destined to allow his brothers to end it all.
Fic Masterpost Art Masterpost
Title: Frate, non far: ché tu se' ombra, e ombra vedi. (Brother, do not so: for you are a shadow, and a shadow am I.)
Pairing (if any): Emotionally, Castiel/Dean/Gabriel. Although the only actual sex is Dean/Gabriel, all the relationships draw on elements of romance and the erotic in places.
Genre/Tropes: Purgatory!fic; threesome; amnesia; incorporeal!Gabriel (sometimes); dom/sub themes.
Word count: 41k
Warnings/Spoilers: Spoilers through to the end of season 7. Various forms of PTSD, as we’d expect of Dean and Castiel following the end of season 7. Moderate angelcest. Slightly sexual dom/sub elements (used to a specific therapeutic end rather than as a regular dynamic in the relationship), including edgeplay and not-exactly-mindsex. Moderate-level sexual situation initiated by a character who isn’t capable of fully conscious consent. Amnesia. Strange narrative voice, as the P. O. V. character begins the story semi-formless in mind and body, and the narrative style gets clearer as he relearns himself and the world around him. Swearing, in Dean and Gabriel’s dialogue and (increasingly as the story progresses) in the narrative voice.
Summary: A Purgatory fairy tale. Finding Gabriel in Purgatory is only the start. Steeped in Purgatory’s Lethe effect, Gabriel has forgotten everything about himself and the world - or has he? Dean is determined that he’s getting all of them out Dick-land and back into the real world, but when one angel doesn’t believe he deserves to get out and the other one doesn’t know what out is, that’s easier said than done.
Sequel to La diritta via era smarrita. It isn’t necessary to have read it to understand this, but it's only 3500 words, so it’s really more of a prologue.
